CATAMRANS, A DAZZLING GROWTH…

 Sunreef

You had to be at this year’s Miami Boat Show (2022) to understand the extraordinary acceleration effect for this category of boat.

- Lagoon with its impressive stand.
- The superb Sunreef 80’ sail.
- Aquila, was showing off their new 54 and 70.
- Robertson & Caine was just as active, but under the 54 foot mark.
- Prestige will keep us waiting to see their new catamaran which will be produced by its new M division.
- Beneteau was present with its EXCESS range.

Fountaine Pajot has renamed its entire range of catamarans, but there maybe a slight confusion at first glance, as now they have named the boats for their interior space.  For example, the MY6 was the old MY44 which was simply renamed with a LOA of 45.9 ft.

When shopping, it is imperative to compare the dimensions, weight, engine hp, features such as the storage, location and working space in the galley, interior and exterior seating, bedrooms and their respective washrooms/showers, interior and exterior refrigerators, presence of teak, power of the generator, power of the air conditioning, L.E.D. or basic light, hydraulic platform or hydraulic support for the dinghy, capacity of the electrical box, natural ventilation (sturdy or plastic windows), the ergonomics, in short, a lot of features to be studied.

There is also the CE classification: A or B or C, which does not correspond to a standard based on luxury, but rather the catamaran’s capacity to face more difficult sailing conditions.

Ideally, you should know the value (perception) of the catamaran on the market to evaluate its possible resale value. For this, you need access to a professional and experienced broker.

Catamarans are becoming more and more popular and are a very interesting choice in terms of interior and exterior space. They also offer great stability which is a definite advantage and for the moment, marinas across North America welcome catamarans without any problem even if they have an average width of 20 to 25 feet.

The vast majority will have a maximum speed of 18 to 22 kn and this is quite normal considering their hull type and is acceptable considering the many other advantages.

There are more and more manufacturers on the market, especially from Europe. It is important to find out about the warranty offered by the manufacturer and/or the dealer. Are there North American parts warehouses? How was the electrical box assembled? That is to say, a true North American 220-110V, 60 hz electrical installation and not an adaptation of the European 230V-50 hz standard.

Also, the navigation and entertainment electronics must be in NTSC standard instead of the European PAL standard.

There is generally no problem with engines, generators and air conditioning warranties, since the most important manufacturers of these components are located here in North America.
